Troubleshooting Your Gas Logs That Won’t Stay Lit

Gas log fireplace

Your gas log fireplace is an excellent source of heat and comfort. There are times when you may have a few difficulties. One of the biggest problems is when your gas logs won’t stay lit.

There are several reasons that this might happen. You can troubleshoot the problem on your own to try and find out what’s wrong.

Is Your Pilot Light On?

Look to see if your pilot light is on. If it isn’t, try and light it again. If it doesn’t light, you may have a problem in your gas line, or the small jet may be blocked, preventing gas from flowing correctly.

If you can’t get the pilot light to stay on, you should call the technicians at Meetze Plumbing. They can check the gas line and the logs to ensure nothing is obstructing the gas flow.

Is Your Pilot Light Blue?

If your pilot light burns blue when lit, that’s a good thing. If it doesn’t burn blue, there’s a problem. When a pilot light is any color other than blue, the gas flowing to your logs could be contaminated.

This isn’t something you can fix on your own. You’ll need to call the gas company and let them know what’s happening.

Is Your Pilot Light On and Blue?

If your pilot light is on and burning blue, it may mean that the thermocouple is out in your fireplace. You can choose to try and troubleshoot the problem yourself, or if you don’t feel comfortable trying to uncover the problem, it’s time to call the professionals.

Checking Your Thermocouple

To check the thermocouple, you’ll need to turn off the gas. Using a multimeter, you must touch the probes to the elements and watch the meter carefully.

If the reading is below 300 millivolts, the thermopile may need to be replaced. If the multimeter reads below 25 millivolts, the thermocouple is bad and needs to be replaced. If you’re unsure of the readings, the professional staff at Meetze Plumbing can help you figure things out.
